CHAPTER 6 - The Cliff
Twelve years had passed since Luna and her daughters escaped from the palace. But the King was still looking for them. Every few years they would move from country to country, and each time, the King's soldiers (specialized assassins) would come and find them. And each time they were lucky to escape.
Nicholas was only a thief, not worthy of a queen and he knew it, his love for Luna came as unexpected. Luna was one of the King's three wives, a queen of Siiria... And her daughters were only pets at the Kings disposal. But Nicholas was willing to do anything to gain the Queen's trust and be deemed worthy of her grace. He couldn't stand to see the pain in her eyes as she served the King, like a slave in her own palace.
And although they escaped from the palace to start a better life, the running affected Luna's daughters differently... Her youngest daughter; Victoria loved the traveling, then again- she was the optimist and didn't fully grasp the fact that the King wanted her imprisoned... Kyla didn't remember much of the palace life. They had left when she was only five, but she always dreamt of the life she could have had and she wanted it back... and then there was Vera, the oldest of the girls. She experienced the Kings injustice first hand and over the twelve years of running, her hatred for the King slowly built up inside of her. She knew what he was capable of, and she knew he would stop at nothing to retrieve his property.
Vera never wished to go back. But she couldn't stop herself from thinking about what it would be like, the luxury of the palace life. Just the idea of being a princess, respected and loved by all. Whereas, out here, countries away, she was a nobody. With no friends and no real home. It was tedious and painful moving from one country to another, knowing that eventually they would be found out again. No matter where they went they would be found. Yet it was worse, not knowing when the King's soldiers would come. Even worse than that, was not knowing what the King would do with them once they were captured.
There was not a day that passed by that she didn't think about. She walked through the streets of the town in fear, constantly looking back to make sure she wasn't being followed. But she was ready for them this time.
These past few years she has been practicing any type of magic that would prove useful. Late at night she would experiment with different herbs, trying to improve the healing process of a wound. Some days she would mixing up spells that even the best casters would be jealous of. But spells would need more room to be tested, the cliffs provided everything she needed. Out there, she would over look their island, and the little town that lay in the middle of it. If anyone new was coming into town, she would know about it. If anyone was spying on her or the town, she would know about it.
If the soldiers came for her or her family, Vera would be sure to put them all out of their misery. Her mother, Luna, had protected her for twenty years, it was about time that Vera started taking care of her family. That's exactly what she was planning on doing.
Almost every morning, before her daily chores of herb gathering, she would go out and head off to the cliffs with Sapphire. Standing out onto the ledge, looking into the sunrise, sometimes she would forget about everything she was missing.
Downhill from the cliffs was where Vera got all her herbs. Most specifically it is where she picked the golden rose. Throughout the seven kingdoms, very few went out searching for this poisonous flower. And fewer still knew how to prepare it into a potion that could heal the deadliest of wounds.
Vera's mother, Luna, had taught her everything she knew. In fact, Vera, at only 20years, had become an expert in the art of brewing potions and natural remedies. The shop she owned in town quickly became very well known on the island and the islands surrounding them. Her family tired to avoid this type of popularity but her mother, Luna, lived by only one philosophy - a person who has the knowledge and skill to be of assistance, is obliged, as a child of G-d, to help any soul in need of their aid. No matter what inconvenience it created, knowledge could not be kept, it must be used to help the less fortunate. So despite the fact that the King's forces were looking for them, Luna would never offer anything less than her best to helpless souls in need. And Vera soon adapted that same thought process.
The early mornings she spent collecting flowers and herbs or various types would go into her potions that she used to treat people. Some would require a basic tonic for hypertension while others required something strongly intertwined with incantations. Whatever they needed, Vera knew she was up for the task and it all started here on this island which was brimming with the most diverse of plants and animals. It was truly a paradise.
Even the butterflies flew by gracefully through the sunlit sky. And from the corner of her eye, Vera saw the slight blue shimmer of their wings.
"Butterflies? No, NO!" she shouted out, "Tell me you see them too Sapphire?! You see them don't you?"
Vera turned to her animal companion who was also looking up at the butterflies and tracing their movements.
"Oh thank G-d you see them... I was worried it was only me again." Vera said with a relief.
All that excitement had bought up feelings she kept well locked up. She had worked hard to establish some emotional and mental stability, this was not the time to have it all come crashing down. CHAPTER 1 CHAPTER 2CHAPTER 3CHAPTER 4CHAPTER 5
